1. Beware phishing scams!

Unfortunately, this seems to be one of the most popular times of year for scammers trying to trick you into giving them your details. Look out for spelling mistakes, or unusual sounding email addresses. Most of all, beware unsolicited emails with deals that seem to be too good to be true – because they probably are.

2. Protect your packages.

Shopping online offers the ultimate convenience at such a busy time of year, but unfortunately ‘parcel pirates’ will be on the look out for unattended packages outside homes. Where possible, choose a delivery time when you know you’ll be home, or set up a system with your neighbours, where you take each other’s parcels in.

3. Avoid shopping on public wifi.

You’ll probably be playing Santa from the comfort of your sofa, but if you find yourself out and about with sudden gift inspiration, then avoid public wifi networks. Digital fraudsters will sometimes stake out cafes and malls with public wifi offerings and set up malicious hot spots that can be hard to identify as fraudulent.

4. Keep on top of your statements.

This is good advice year-round, not just during the holiday season. But keeping on top of your statements is particularly important at this time of year. Knowing exactly what money should be coming out of your account and who it should be going to will make it easier to spot any fraudulent activity. You can also keep on top of your overall financial situation by monitoring your credit report – particularly for any accounts you didn’t open.
